
Dr. Sophia Bakogianni

Dr. Sophia Bakogianni is an archaeologist – art historian at the Directorate of Modern Cultural Heritage of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture. Currently, she is seconded to the National Centre for Public Administration and Local Government in Greece, where she works as a Scientific Personnel at the Institute of Training. She also worked as a museum curator at the Byzantine and Christian Museum.
She holds a Doctoral Degree in Social Information Systems from the Open University of Cyprus. Jahna Otterbacher, who is an Associate Professor at the Open University of Cyprus, supervised her PhD study.
Her PhD dissertation, entitled “Understanding Museum Social Media Experiences“, concerns people’s perceptions, preferences, feelings and practices through their interaction with museums on social media, such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter (now X). Particularly, she is interested in user-centered methods in order to comprehend user agency on museum social media, beyond the metrics and analytics offered by the platforms.
She is also a postdoctoral researcher at the Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences.
Dr. Sophia Bakogianni is the co-founder of the Museum Social Media Cultures Research Network, which aspires to understand the transformation of behaviors, practices and values in and outside the museums developed by the use of social media.
