Participant Information Sheet for online interviews via Facebook Messenger

Title of the study: “Understanding User Experience in Museums’ Social Media Sites”

Thank you very much for accepting to participate in the study. Your participation in this study is completely voluntary, and there are no known risks associated with participating in this.

The purpose of this study is to understand users’ interaction or not with museums on social media. This knowledge is being sought for Ms. Sophia Bakogianni’s PhD dissertation that is conducted under the supervision of Dr. Jahna Otterbacher, Assistant Professor at the Open University of Cyprus (OUC).

The process of the study involves answering questions relating to your interactions or not with museums on Facebook and your opinion on the museums’ social media activities. This short interview will be conducted via Facebook Messenger. It should not take more than 30 minutes. But first, it is important that you fill in the form, which includes some demographic data and it allows you to give your consent to the online interview.

Will my data be identifiable?

I will keep all personal information about you (e.g. your name and any other information that can identify you) strictly confidential, that is I will not share them with others but my supervisor. The use of your personal data will abide to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and to research ethical requirements.

What will happen to the results of the research study?

I will use the information you shared with me for research purposes only. These will include my PhD thesis and other publications, e.g. journal articles, etc., and/or presentations at conferences, seminars, etc. I explicitly state that the information you provide will not be used for any commercial or promotional purpose.

When writing up the findings from this study, I might reproduce some of the views and ideas you shared with me. In this case, I will only use anonymized quotes and I will give pseudonyms, so that although I will use your exact words, you cannot be identified in any publications.

The study is not designed to help you personally, but the results may help the investigators learn more about users’ interactions with museums on social media, and we hope, in the future, other people might benefit from this study.

How will my data be stored?

Your data will be stored in encrypted files and on password-protected computers. I will store hard copies of any data securely and keep them for a minimum of ten years, in accordance with University guidelines. The only other person who will have access to the data is my supervisor. I will exclude all personal data from archiving and the identification list will not be shared.
